Val Verde Unified School District Reports Significant SEL Gains with Schoolbeat Implementation

Val Verde Unified School District has released a new research brief highlighting the impact of Schoolbeat’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) platform across the district during the 2024–2025 school year. The findings show substantial improvements in teacher adoption, student behavior, and attendance—results rarely seen in such a short implementation window.

According to the study, teacher adoption of SEL practices increased from just 8% with previous programs to 75% districtwide after implementing Schoolbeat. Schools that integrated Schoolbeat with high fidelity saw the strongest outcomes, including an average 12% reduction in low-level behavior referrals, with one site experiencing a 55% decrease. At the case study school, Rainbow Ridge Elementary, low-level referrals dropped by 40%, office referrals declined by 58%, and suspensions were eliminated entirely.

The research also found measurable gains in student readiness to learn and SEL competencies. High-utilization schools reported significant improvements in students’ ability to manage emotions, resolve conflicts, and foster positive peer interactions. Districtwide attendance also improved, with unexcused absences falling by more than 20% and chronic absenteeism declining by more than 4%.

The brief attributes these results to consistent, schoolwide implementation and the ease of use of Schoolbeat’s ready-to-teach lessons, which reduced barriers to teacher buy-in and sustained use. Researchers noted that no other major variables, such as staffing changes or shifts in data collection, occurred during the study period, strengthening the link between Schoolbeat implementation and observed outcomes.

The findings reinforce the role of high-fidelity, Tier 1 SEL instruction in improving classroom climate, student behavior, and overall school engagement, positioning Val Verde USD as a leading example of scalable, effective SEL implementation.
